Enlisted-Canning Town Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, France
The 17th Royal Fusiliers battalion arrived in France in June 1915 as part of 99 Brigade, 33rd Division and in December 1915, they transferred to 5 Brigade, 2nd Division. On 2nd March, 1916 they left their billets at Fosse 10, a mining village east of Bully-Grenay and moved into the front line in the Calonne sector where they remained until relieved on 19th March. The Battalion Diary recorded that on 16th March the enemy artillery was active and that the battalion had to endure ‘whizz-bangs’ and shrapnel during which, one man, August Brown, was killed.
